Geoffrey Mountvarner
A leading member of the medical community of Washington, DC, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner actively promotes quality care and service. Currently employed at the Howard University Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine, he serves as the facility’s Chief and Interim Chairman. Responsible for strategic planning and a 58,000 patient capacity area, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner gathered large improvements in customer service ratings while a 95% improvement in emergency department closure time. Under his guidance, new emergency department initiatives have been completed including the establishment of new physician orientation and recruitment protocols, a template-based chart documentation system, and the setup of advanced triage protocols along with emergent and difficulty airway equipment. Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner is also well published in medical journals and related literature. These include articles in Annals of Emergency Medicine and publications by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Center for Disease Control. Traveling to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner assisted the relief efforts and earned a Governor’s Citation award in the State of Maryland. His work with disadvantaged black males earned him the Prince George’s County Department of Health Citizens Citation in 2007.
While serving the community at Howard University, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner also commits his time as the Washington, DC Medical Director and Assistant Fire Chief. While evaluating and assessing over 250 advanced life support providers (ALS), he is responsible for the oversight of EMS training and medical treatment protocols. He views the EMS and fire department personnel as "heroes who put their life on the line for others." Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner enjoys competing in marathons and triathlons. He participated in the New York City Marathon in 2003, 2004, and 2006, as well as the Dextrose Triathlon in 2009 and the Chicago Triathlon in 2010.
