When working for small and medium sized businesses, or for any business to be brutally honest, it's useless to create "art" (see The Tate for that), or work aimed at winning prestigious awards. The only thing that matters is creating work that contributes to the bottom line. That doesn't mean the work is not creative. It has to be creative in order to sell, it's just about where the focus is. I set up Apple Marketing specifically to provide marketing knowledge, creative services and technical web know-how under one roof. All at a reasonable price.
