Carlton Hobbs
Carlton Hobbs has been influential in the arts trade for nearly 30 years. The London-born powerhouse established his presence on the American antiques scene in New York upon acquiring his own show space in Manhattan. Carlton Hobbs LLC is housed at the former mansion of Virginia Fair Vanderbilt on 60 East 93rd St. Designed by John Russell Pope, a world-renowned architect of his era, the classically inspired mansion possesses a Parisian flair from the 1930s.
Carlton Hobbs purchased the 20,000-square-foot mansion in 2002 and restored it to its original beauty over 4 years. Carlton Hobbs has filled the neoclassical estate with an eclectic range of British and European antiques, allowing the grand tone of the former Vanderbilt mansion to support each piece on display. The items included in Carlton Hobbs’ inventory are a treasure trove of all aspects of the decorative arts, including paneled rooms, tapestries, and rare objets d'art.
Though he now resides in New York, Carlton Hobbs continues to be a prominent figure in European antiques. His recent showcase in London at the Masterpiece Fair featured an entire library from the 18th-century Hotel Gaulin in Dijon, France. J. P. Morgan purchased the library set and presented it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1923. The collection was later loaned to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the early 1950s.
Carlton Hobbs currently displays the room at his New York gallery, with a retail price of $3.8 million. In excellent condition, the library consists of hand-carved lime wood and pear delicately protruding from glazed and gilded beige panels. The French library and other rare antiques available at Mr. Hobbs’ gallery allow collectors the opportunity to obtain museum-quality pieces.
